Holiday Monday

Across most of the USA we are enjoying our second 4 day weekend of the summer, all except for the people like Police, Fire, EMT's, and other Hospital folks who have to work on 24/7/365 shifts. Also ALL of our people who have made this holiday possible by serving in our Armed Forces, they don't get the day off either. Boy I remember those days, It always seemed in Police work that the holidays were the busiest times of the year so almost nobody got the day off, I had to have more than 10 years seniority just to take a vacation between May and October when I first started, and that almost never included a holiday weekend, So now that Donna & I can enjoy our time off like today I am really grateful for those folks that can't.

I'll bet you can't guess what Donna did after coffee today, yep, baked a cake for the guy in her office that runs the IT section. Hear that Rick hope you were appreciated like that when you did that. She says this guy keeps the place going from his laptop. Here's the finished product.

Jerries Cake 07-05-10b

                 Jerry's Birthday Cake

Yesterday when I checked my blood sugar it was 92, I'll bet it's 200 just looking at this cake. Really knows how to hurt a diabetic guy doesn't she.

After seeing all the birdie picture's I decided to buy and put a Hummingbird Feeder in back by the Kitchen window, not to close though so I will have to shoot it from a tripod through the window, hope we attract some soon , Donna said I was getting impatient after 5  minutes.

The top picture was hand held and not zoomed in to tight, if I tripod mount it I can probably take it with a fast enough shutter to freeze motion. I'm reading up on it now. Judy From Travels with Emma   has mastered it with her Canon so I will be trying, I'm sure after some practice it will come, I know I have seen other blogs with hummers froze in flight.

For all those folks that wondered about the wood from the fallen tree here is a portion of it that has been stacked,

There is another pile of bigger stuff that will go on campfires that would be to big to cut into fireplace logs.

The kids had a great day yesterday taking the grandson and Nicole first to the Warren County Fair and then out to the Lake for some fireworks. Adam went home with his Mom and Samantha and Nicole spent the night with us so Grandpa had a breakfast guest this morning. Not much else going on today we are just sitting and enjoying a day of rest. Be safe out there. Sam & Donna.

  1. I sure know what you mean about military and police, fire, etc. having to work no matter what...My son is a firefighter, son-in-law is a detective, one daughter is a vascular ultra-sound tech in a hosptital..VERY hard to get us all at one table for holiday dinners.
Donna is very talented in the cake decorating department!!! My cake baking consists of running to WalMart bakery and ordering one. And keep an eye peeled for the hummingbirds..they sneek in when you least expect it...

  3. I've been practicing with action shots with my Cannon too. I just keep mashing the button to take a bazillion pictures in a row....and as you can imagine, with all those shots, I usually get one decent one ;) Things sure have come a long way from the days when we had to use film, and decide if an image was worth wasting one out of 24 pictures on :)

  4. Jerry is a lucky guy....that is a terrific looking cake and I bet it taste even better.

So many people forget those that NEVER have a holiday off. We should all be forever grateful to their service to our country and its people.

Donna is right...be patient with your hummers. They will come. It took almost 5 days before any came to ours here in the campground. Now we have many and have to fill up the feeders regularly. Hang in there, they'll come. Mike and I are still working on catching those little guys with our camera. I want a pic with the wings stopped in action.

    Take care!

  7. Donna sure does a fine job with those cakes! The Hummers will warm up to you. We have eight feeders and the little birds will land on us if we are close to the feeders...pretty cool!
