Monday Meanderings.

Up at the early hour of 04:30AM and had our coffee, Donna was off to the truck company, Not much accomplished today, except for the first time in over ten years, I decided to take a ride in the the Police Department I retired from. A lot of guys can't stay away from their old haunts, but I have had other jobs and careers, and time just gets away from you so my son Andy & I took a ride into St Louis County to the Dellwood Police Office. There I met two guys that used to work for me, Lt. Fred Haunold, and Sgt. Kurt Solari. plus some young officers I had never met or never heard of me. It really turned out to be a great hour of reminiscing and catching up. All of our kids are grown, and the grandkids are coming up, they both got a big kick out of my beard. Of course I hear about how I used to have a dark mustache and hair. and now everything is white..Kurt gave me a new department ball cap since mine is showing it's age. All in all it was a nice visit.

I am sure glad that I don't have to ride the streets of that area again, as a lot of you who have never lived in a metropolitan area would say right away, whoa that is a bad neighborhood. But it was once a great area and the decline was well under way before I retired, in a way it doesn't look much different and the department has kept providing good equipment and training and it looks like it is pretty well up to date.

Anyway that was it and now I am back in my world, and I can watch the snow melt and count the days till we can get away.

Hope everyone is having a great day, Just waiting for Donna to come home , she said she would pick up dinner tonight so it will be a surprise. Be safe out there. Sam & Donna.

  1. The police department that Denny and I retired from sends us an annual report with pictures of the new hires, retired officers and those who have passed on. After over twelve years away from the people we worked with, we find that we don't recognize over 3/4 of the staff now and I'm sure they would have no clue as to who we were if we were to stop in. However, the chief still calls me "Ma Barker" because he says I was always gunning for him (he hired on well after I did and as a very vocal head dispatcher we butted heads a few times since I was not intimidated by him as he thought I should be. Hee.)

  2. Yep, you just have to move on. The working life is behind us, and few remember our contributions it seems. That's life! I like this life so much better than my working life. :)

  3. I often go back in where I spent my last years of working life. It is fun to talk to everyone, but more fun knowing I don't have to get up and do anything anymore.

  4. Glad to see you got a new cap out of your visit, Sam. It doesn't take long for things to change once us old guys retire from a place.

  5. That was quite a day! I do like the idea of just sitting and watching the snow melt ... and planning the route an adventure!
