Wednesday Meanderings.

Was up and at em at 05:00AM and it was a cold, 24 Degrees, with the high only in the 30’s for a couple days then back up to 50 on Saturday.

Donna went for a job interview at Walgreens and got the job, a part time position to supplement her restaurant job. Of course that will mean a later start for any vacation we can plan, Donna finally explained she wants to get out from under her health care which is taking over $400 a month and lots of stuff that isn’t covered at a $100 deductible thanks to Obamacare.

So it looks like maybe the Escapees Escapade in May in Indiana this Spring will be it for us. It starts on the 17th , so all our friends out there that are Escapees let us know if we will see you. We had a great time at the one in Sedalia Mo. but Wyoming was to far for us last year.

Donna is off tonight, the restaurant has been slow so thy have cut the staffing until it picks up. Donna gets called in though so she isn’t missing many hours and still has Thur-Fri-and Sat.

Nothing much doing just waiting for the Spring thaw. maybe then I will take a couple days and camp along the railroad and take some movies and pictures. Only real expense there is fuel, I eat when I’m home anyway.

Hope all is well with all our friends, remember let us know who will be going to the Escapade. Be safe out there. Sam & Donna………

  1. Well, shoot!..I do understand the health care situation. We are both Medicare, but we have a spending account provided by Den's former employer, Cat, that we can pay our supplemental with...I know we are blessed. Hope you can get out of there in the Spring!

  2. If I remember correctly, you've been complaining about Donna's health care plan, or lack of one, long before the Affordable Care Act was even passed. Lack of health care was the reason you gave for Donna not being able to retire.

At least with Donna's past health concerns she won't be able to be turned down now for a pre-existing condition which she certainly may have been before.

    1. Rick, this is Donna, I have always had healthcare thru my employer and cobraed it when I left. but because of the increase to insurance companies because of Obamacare premiums have gone up along with deductible for most of us that have our non-government insurance. Personally do not remember Sam ever complaining about our health care plan. has it been as good as many..no..but I worked for an employer with a young median age therefore they opted for less coverage. From previous remarks I know you think Obama is doing okay, but you do not live in the very conservative midwest and have to live with a lot of the legislation that has been passed that affects us and not you.

    2. Donna, I do remember Sam writing about health insurance concerns many times on his blog and with good reason. Here's just one from:

Dec. 31, 2010 No resolutions here, just the hopes that someway Donna will be able to retire hopefully by August and we can make some plans for travel. The big obstacle is health Insurance,

Regardless, Obamacare is also helping millions of Americans who could never afford health insurance and the Republican Party has not offered one single alternative solution.

President Obama has won 2 elections based on his Affordable Care Act so it seems to me the American people have spoken rather loudly.

  3. Donna, good luck with your new job - and with your insurance. So many have been negatively impacted by Obamacare so I hope you are able to find a better alternative to what you had. We have medicare but with the cuts that have been made to fund Obamacare, we are concerned as well. Best of luck to you.

    1. So many have been negatively affected by Obamacare? That's a laugh. Millions and millions have been positively affected. Disgruntled Republicans will always hate it but they have offered no alternative.

Obamacare is a done deal. Get over it.

    2. btw....we can all still remember Mitt Romney's alternative to Obamacare when he was asked what would happen if Obamacare was repealed - "That's what hospital emergency rooms are for". Just wonderful, Mitt - it's no wonder you lost big time!!

  4. Heath care is a hot button topic.... But rick has some good points.... Most people dont know the full cost of their healthcare bacuse their employer pays a large portion as a benefit to the job. Steves total premium is almost $2,000 a month for just he and I. He pays roughly 20% of that out of his checks. If he retires, we can qualify for ACA Coverage at much less than $2,000 a month, and no longer fear cancellation because of my pre_existing conditions. I do believe the current statistics are 90% of people signed up under the ACA now are happy with their plans and rates.

Its kinda like car insurance, when wisconsin passed a law that everyone had to have coverage, to even get license plates.... the ones who snuck by for years without it (risking the rsst of us) complained loudly that it wasnt fair, too expensive, etc well, they all adjusted to it after a while. I imagine it will be the same with health insurance too. And less people using vital ER room services for basic care, and stiffing the hospitals with the bills....

I am not saying any one is right or wrong, but we need something to move us towards a form of nationalized healthcare......

    1. I agree completely that we need some type of universal care, my biggest problem is that the insurance companies are canceling some people to force them into the new healthcare or they are raising deductibles to cover their expenses. I realize they are in business to make money but there has to be a better way than what we currently have. and i'm not making it a dem vs rep as rick suggests, i am making it as a bill that was not thoroughly thought thru.

    3. But Donna.. that is the health insurance companies doing that.. not the government. Some of the largest businesses in Wisconsin are insurance companies. Someone's making the money, and it's not us taxpayers .... sigh.

  5. Hey Donna - just wanted to let you know what we got in the mail just today. It was a notice from Weyerhauser that they are discontinuing salaried employee retirement health care subsidies as of Jan 1, 2015. We didn't get much ($630 each per year) but it helped. Their costs for employee insurance have gone up and so they are discontinuing any benefits for retirees. I'm glad we at least got it this year but it sure is going to pinch next year. I wonder why their cost for employee insurance is going up so much lol!!
