Thursday Happenings.

Another hot one here in Dardenne Prairie, Got Rigg’s to the Vet for an 08:45AM appointment. He has been limping on and off with his left hind leg for about a week. Doesn’t seem to be in pain but there is a fatty lump on his leg.

The Vet did a thorough X-Ray, and the results are that Rigg’s has hip dysplasia that he was born with. Also starting with arthritis. She gave him some medicine for inflammation and some vitamins, He has to take the medicine for 14 days, then if the limping comes back he may be on pills for the rest of his life. The good news is he is not in any pain and should be ok for a while. He weighed 105 lbs. and the Vet wants him to lose some weight and get more exercise which is tough when it is this hot since he won’t go out and play, she said swimming is best for him so I will be making more trips to the doggie park.

Rigg’s lying down by his Mom after taking his medicine.

Made a store run since I was out of beer, and stocked up on some food also.

How about a couple of throwbacks.

  1. Glad to hear that Riggs isn't in any pain. I'm sure he will just hate the fact that he has to go swimming more. lol Glad Donna has a day off and hopefully you guys can get a break from the heat sometime soon.

  2. If the vet didn't recommend that you put him on glucosamine, the I suggest you try it. Our lab, Maggie, would not have lasted as long as she did without it. And myself also have been on it for years. It sure helps with arthritis. I never bothered with the ones for pets as they are so expensive, I just gave her the same ones I took that I got from Costco, make sure they have condroitin in them too. My vet said they would work just fine and they did. It takes about a month to get into their system.

  3. I second the suggestion for giving Riggs glucosamine/chondroiton. And good luck on getting a lab to lose weight! Those dogs just live for food.

    1. Ruth,Gypsy, Our Vet suggested Glucosamine/Condroitin,right away and we stopped at the Drug store on the way home, Walgreens had it buy one get one free.Thank you girls so much for your suggestion though.Sam is heartsick, Rigg's will be just years old in Dec and we are hoping for at least another 5 or 6.

    2. I think you'll be pleased with results of taking it..know how you feel. It's so difficult to see our pets in pain. Losing weight will make a huge difference, but labs are foodies as you know. I add about 1/4 cup of canned green beans (no salt) to all of Jackson's meals. It is good for him, he loves them, and it fills him up with little to no calories. We got 7 pounds off of him.

  4. Swimming will definitely help him, not only is is good exercise for him it will also keep him cooler. I think if he was to lose a little weight it would also put less stress on his hips. Glad you got some Glucosamine, I have also heard that is good for arthritis. Give him a hug and pat for us.

  5. Swimming is good for dogs, but I also think walking him would be good too. However, if Donna walks him..he will walk HER!!! Sounds like his meds will help....big wet kisses to him.

  8. We have had all our dogs on glucosamine. Hip dysplasia, unfortunately, is common in the breed. Coco was diagnosed with severe hip dysplasia when we got her 8 and 1/2 years ago. Her estimated age at that time was approx 2 yrs. Dr. was reluctant to do surgery since despite her dysplasia, she was so functional. I swear that the glucosamine has made a huge difference for her. Also, weight is such an important factor.......hope you can slim him down. Helen
