Was up at 04:30AM and had coffee with my pretty bride, then she was off to the truck company, and then the restaurant.
Rigg’s and I got a nap. Then I started on the blogs, and later in the morning I decided that since I had waited since Sept to take advantage of Microsoft's $39.99 upgrade to Windows 8 that expires at the end of January. I better get in gear and do it if I am going to. I wanted to upgrade the newest laptop we have since it is less than a year old and has Windows 7 in it. I figure to replace the older Dell I have downstairs with a new one and it will undoubtable come with Windows 8 installed. That way we are all the same.
First thing I did was fire off an e-mail to my buddy Rick, I had a couple questions and I wanted to know, I also wanted to see if he had any issues since he upgraded in Sept, he has a laptop I believe similar to mine. Rick got right back to me and reassured me. All was well, so I downloaded the software, It take a little over two hours to download and then install the new operating system. I wanted to keep the programs I had and only one was not compatible and it was something I ended up not needing.
Once I was done and it was installed I set it for the older desktop display, and then checked each of the programs and all seemed to work fine. One of the things I noticed is the color is brighter, and the resolution is better, it also seems to start programs faster. So all in all it looks like it is an improvement over the version I upgraded from. Is it worth it. I believe so especially at the sale price, it will be going up soon , so if you want to save a chunk of change, download it now.
Today is a rainy day in Dardenne Prairie, but close to 50 so it is still milder than normal temps.
Not much going on so I will close with a just be safe out there, for all my friends, Sam & Donna……..
I'm still using Vista and will hang in there with it until we replace the laptop. Hopefully it will last another year or so. Have fun playing with the update. Thank goodness for guru Rick.
ReplyDeleteI updated to w8 on my newest laptop back in September and have not looked back.... But there are times when I have cussed the new startup menu page... But when you get the total Apps page and learn to pin the program you want onto your start page then things go a lot better... Its just a different menu...
ReplyDeleteThis is definitely a McGyver thing...I have no idea, and would cuss the whole damn thing if it was up to me...But we are still on Vista, no upgrades until we buy a new computer. Our laptop is almost 8 years old....older than dirt...Our desk top is about 4 years old...Us old farts like our old computers, I guess..
ReplyDeleteYep, no problems with Vista on our 5 year old laptop that is still working great, and Ruth is still using XP on her little netbook. Can't see the benefit of upgrading because these old laptops continue to do exactly what we want them to do.
ReplyDeleteGood for you, Sam. Nice to keep up with the newer stuff on your computer. It's so nice to have Rick's advice available, isn't it? Don't know what we would do without him when it comes to anything like that. Today we had some snow, Sam, so I need a refill on that box of sunshine, please! Could you send it overnight delivery? I'll pay for the shipping!
ReplyDeleteI am done with Windows myself. 100% Apple convert. I finally drank the kool-aid about 2 1/2 years ago. But regardless of your system, as long as your hardware fairly well exceeds the system requirements (got RAM?), then I'd upgrade to the latest OS for the latest features. But that's how I roll ;)
ReplyDeleteP.S. I stuffed Uncle Sam with Chicken and rice casserole and corn fritters for dinner. Poor guy.

Good job on getting Windows 8 installed and running, Sam. Glad to hear you seem to like it too - it'll get easier to navigate around the more you get used to it.
ReplyDeleteI too am an apple convert...but glad to see all loaded up good for you!!!!
