Monday Musings

We got up at normal time, and had our coffee, Although Donna had the holiday off so it was pretty much a laid back day even Rigg’s was still played out from all the swimming and he took a nap this morning, and then roared back to life before the noon hour. He was in a play mood and wanted to show off his new duckey.

Please Dad play Duckey with me, oh boy, oh boy…

How do you refuse a face like this and those plaintiff eyes. You’d have to have a heart of concrete.

Had to make a Walgreen’s run for prescription’s of course one out of the three had to be called in to the Doctor’s so I will have to wait till tomorrow before it is ready, so that means another trip.

I am torn between two trains of thought, My sisters surgery on the 14th of October and my Grandsons Grandparents Day at his school on the 12th. If I try to be at both I only give myself a one day travel day. I originally wanted to be in PA. a few days before Wendy went in the hospital because I have to pick up a hospital bed and install it in her home, and I wanted to have everything ready for her. Now I am getting Flak from Donna about wanting to drive the full distance of 900 miles straight through . In all fairness to my dear wife,  several bloggers have commented on the sanity of my decision and that at my age I am not a kid anymore and that it is a foolhardy adventure. I want everyone to know that I am going to give it some more serious thought, On one hand I really hate the thought of disappointing my only grandson who at 9 years doesn’t see the same realities as we do. But I also no my limits after driving a coach professionally and I am not a young guy in the service streaking off on a weekend pass from one end of the country to the other. Maybe I can sit down this weekend while we are camping and tell him what has happened and come up with a more attractive alternative for when I get back, Yeah I know it sounds like a con job to me too. Oh well I’ll have to see what I can come up with, It’s different now than when he was actually living here because I don’t see him as much with him living in a different town and being in school all week, plus his Mother lost her car, so he has no way to get back and forth or go anywhere without Grandpa so it will be a long month or more for him too.

Have to take advantage of the next couple of weekends for sure. Not much else going on in Dardenne Prairie today, even the road out front seems like hardly any cars going by today. Just about as lazy as it gets. Be safe out there. Rigg’s and I have a Duckey to play with..Sam & Donna….

  1. At 9 years old Adam has to learn that you can't always have what you want. I am sure that if you explain to him your dilemma, that driving that distance isn't a good idea all in one day, that you see him so often and there will always be other Grandfather Days in the future, and that your sister needs you more at this time because of her surgery, I am sure that he will understand. He will miss you, but he will know that you are there helping someone else in your family who needs you more at this time. I know it is hard on children at that age but they also need to know that they aren't the only ones who need your attention.

Take care whatever your decision is.

  3. Yeah, it's really better you don't risk falling nighty night at the wheel...You might be surprised at how well Adam will handle it, if you explain that Grampa just can't do that long of a drive, and he wants Grampa to stay safe...
Riggens looks like he has 2 huge blue lips...he's killin' me here!!!

  4. I know how you feel, Sam and you're facing a tough decision. These school events are really important to kids especially when they get to bring parents and grandparents.

I don't know the particulars of your sister's surgery but I do know, in most cases, we can't do much for anyone before the operation. After that, is when they really need assistance.

So, is it possible to simply "reverse" your plans a bit and instead of getting to your sisters a few days before, stay a few days later? I would think you'd be able to get a few hundred miles in after Adam's school day (3pm??), if you were ready to go, and that would leave a much shorter drive on the 13th.

It would still give you enough time to get the hospital bed sometime on the 14th or even the 15th. Just another thought for you to toss around!

  5. Our conflcts with our commitments to family are often self imposed. You, like us, know our limits. We have driven the 1200 miles between NJ and Louisiana straight through. Then we started stopping one night. We now need two nights. Adam loves you and will understand. Just tell him you are OLD. Always works for me with my granddaughters! Hey - just a thought!

  6. (catching up on blogs here)

Duke says to tell Riggs that he better hide that duck when visiting us, because he would disembowel it and get at that "squeaker"!

I know the tug you are feeling for your grandson and your sister. But he is young and other special days are coming... and if he was to think if he was the one in the hospital and needing help, he will understand how his Grandpa is needed by everyone.

  7. I totally agree with Kevin and Ruth. This is an excellent opportunity to have a talk with Adam to explain what you have told us. It is a lesson for him to learn from you. Sometimes life is really simple - it's just doing the right thing. IMO the right thing is to consider your own safety and to take care of your sister in her time of need. I think Adam is a good kid and he will understand. I know it is difficult because I've missed some of the Grandparent's Days because I had a job and then we went full-time.

    Love the Ducky.

  9. I still think 900 miles in one day is too much! How would your grandson feel if something happened to you from pushing it too far? YOU BE SAFE OUT THERE, SAM! :)

  10. Sam, I want you to go to Grandparents day with Adam. There is no need for you to get here before I go for surgery. Even if you get here late in the afternoon on the 14th, I'm fine. I am walking over. The surgery is at 10:30 and I will not be home until the 15 possibly even the 16th. So you better not disappoint Adam or I'll be mad.
